aBOUT THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT ASSOCIATION
Keeping the spirit alive

The Theodore Roosevelt Association is a historical and public service organization dedicated to perpetuating the memory and ideals of Theodore Roosevelt. While looking back at Roosevelt’s life, times, and legacy, we have our sights on the future through programs that recognize brave and gifted individuals, inspire public service, bring comfort to sick children, and develop tomorrow’s leaders.

On the history front, we support new scholarship about Roosevelt, his life and times in our quarterly Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal and through conferences and presentations by leading historians and authors. We also support the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund for research grants at the American Museum of Natural History.

Since our founding in 1919, the TRA has been instrumental in preserving sites of importance to Roosevelt’s life and legacy. We maintain close ties with many historic landmarks, including Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, NY, Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City, Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial in Washington, DC, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, and Pine Knot, the Roosevelts’ presidential retreat in Albemarle County, VA.

The TRA carries Roosevelt’s ideals into current times through a variety of programs.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Police Awards
Established in 1983 to honor the 125th anniversary of Roosevelt’s birth and his term as Chair of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York City, these awards, given in cities across the country, recognize law enforcement officers who continue to render outstanding and praiseworthy service despite a serious handicap, illness, or injury.

  • Teddy Bears for Kids
Since 1986 the TRA has given more than 86,000 teddy bears to hospitalized children, to bring them comfort and a little joy in a stressful situation. Through relationships with 65 hospitals and partnering organizations, we’ve reached sick kids nationwide.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contests
Given annually in several locations, these competitions challenge high school students to develop, organize, and communicate ideas relating to the life and career of President Theodore Roosevelt using critical thinking, independent research and proper speech.

  • USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)
The TRA is a support organization for this Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, and we annually bestow the Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Leadership Award, which recognizes the USS TR junior officer who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, pride, professionalism, and dedication to duty that were embodied by Theodore Roosevelt.

  • Strenuous Life Adventures
Theodore Roosevelt was a physically active, daring, and curious individual who traveled the world and left his mark as an explorer and adventurer. Our members take historical and cultural tours of places of importance to Roosevelt and his legacy.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal
Given periodically to recognize individuals who have achieved the highest levels of public service, scholarship, and discovery, in the spirit of Roosevelt’s selfless service, strenuous endeavor, patriotic idealism, and practical accomplishments.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Medal of Honor
Given periodically to recognize individuals who have contributed substantially to American public life, letters, and science.
